michelle obama is a much more known entity. she's in a lot of ways i think widely accepted to be one of the president's most powerful surrogates. what do you think she needs to do in terms of driving home the message that her husband is doing the most effective job possible, is prioritizing the middle class and the american economy? >> in an odd way, i think she is very different from ann romney. ann romney is not a professional politician. michelle obama is not a professional politician, either, but she has become something of one in the last four years. she has spoken off of a teleprompter, for instance. ann romney had never done that before. they will be judged differently. i think she needs to sell her husband both in terms of the middle class, in terms of policies but i think she also needs to paint this portrait of him as a husband, as a father, as sort of an every day guy because realistically, that is what ann romney was doing about her own husband. i think that michelle obama as we said is widely accepted as a terrific

obama's speech but also to the two speeches we remember most from the past two conventions where barack obama did world historical barn burners in 2008 and 2004. >> world historical barn burners. eamon, i want to ask you, we talked a lot about we are talking about bumps and sort of the net-net for the president and the democrats coming out of the dnc. the jobs numbers that we got this morning are not great ones. the fact that the unemployment rate has ticked down is of course good but there are mitigating factors there. tell us what you think the effect is on the labor scene as it affects the president going into the final stretch before november. >> well, no doubt about it, this was a lousy jobs number. i'm kind of a silver lining kind of guy and i always look for the silver linings. i can't really find one here. 96,000 new jobs created might sound like a lot, but that's below expectations of about 125,000, and remember, you need to add about 100,000 to 120,000 just to tread water to keep up with population growth. so we're not even doing that with this number here. so it's a lot of ba

while republicans dragged a chair onstage to conjure up an invisible president obama, michelle obama critiqued governor romney without mentioning his name, drawing sharp contrasts with her husband and creating a profile in negatives. >> barack's success isn't about how much money you make. it's about the difference you make in people's lives. we learned about honesty and integrity, that the truth matters, that you don't take shortcuts or play by your own set of rules. he's the same man who started his career by turning down high-paying jobs. the issues that come across a president's desk are always the hard ones. the problems where no amount of data or numbers will get you to the right answer. i have seen first-hand that being president doesn't change who you are. no, it reveals who you are. >> joining us now from charlotte, north carolina, is margaret carlson of bloomberg news. margaret, great to see you. before i get to you, i want to send a question over to our folks on set. senator bradley, someone who has in fact run for president, i want to ask you the question of michelle obam

says that we all feel we're just saddled with this and when a bath mat should have been able to beat obama based on the polls and romney is looking like it's not it, i would be panicked more than just at the beginning of every month. i would never stop wearing depe depends. >> dave wood, beyond the strategy and the seeming lack thereof, the other thing i thought romney's comments betrayed were a really naive understanding of the arab world and also an incredibly vague foreign policy platform. rich whimson, romney's senior adviser on these matters gave an interview where he tried to outline some specifics and for me what that did was underscore how completely obscure and vague romney has been and how incapable he's been in terms of elucidating a foreign policy platform any way different from that of the president. >> yeah. i've talked to rich williams. he's a smart guy, but what bother med about this week was, the romney campaign's emphasis on returning to a strong america. and trying to portray president obama as weak. the problem with that is, we've been there. remember when ronald reagan
